Very impressive resume! Good luck as a Buckeye!

Darin Heavlin to the Ohio State!

As former OHSAA wrestling state qualifier in 2008, senior Darin Heavilin was expecting to have a stellar year. However, he received a concussion during the first match of the year, and was only able to compete in five matches. He attempted to resume wrestling at the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference tournament. He won the first two matches by falls in a total time of just one minute. During the quarterfinal match, Heavilin took a commanding 8-0 lead and nearly pinned his opponent. Unfortunately, he received another concussion, lost the match and had to withdraw from the tournament. He missed the sectionals and was not able to compete for another state birth. Needless to say, he and his family were disappointed, but everyone hoped that Darin would have the opportunity to continue his wrestling career.

Last month, everyone’s wishes were granted as Darin learned that he is a member of The Ohio State University 2010-2011 wrestling team. Ohio State is one of the top teams in the country and finished as the #2 team in the NCAA tournament in 2008 and 2009. So Darin’s career will continue at one of the premier wrestling programs in the United States.

During his high school career, Heavilin complied a record of 73-30, was a state qualifier in 2008, two-time district qualifier and two-time OVAC place finisher. He was member of the 2009 state dual team 5th place finish for Harrison Central, where he was 3-0 on the day. He was also a member of the 2009 OVAC overall team champions.

In addition, Heavilin was a three-year letter winner in football, captain his senior year and was a member of Harrison Central’s first OHSAA playoff team. Darin was a two-year member of the baseball team.

Even though Heavilin excelled on the mat and field, his true accomplishments were in the classroom. He finished #1 in his class with a 4.0 gpa and class valedictorian. He has won many awards and scholarships including the Ray Kroc Award, Army Reserve Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, OVAC All Academic Team, Buckeye 8 All Conference Team for three years, OHSAA Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, Harrison Central Booster Club Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, Ruitan Scholar all four years, 2008 Ohio Academic All State in wrestling, Lucas D. Sedgmer Scholarship, Cadiz Alumni Scholarship, Ohio State Alumni Scholarship, Ernie Hardwick Memorial Scholarship, Buckeye Boys State Delegate and Close-up Foundation participant in Washington DC. Darin was a two-year member of the National Honor Society and class president.

Darin will be pursuing a Computer Engineering degree. He and his family reside in Bloomingdale. His parents are Darin and Jamie Heavilin and his siblings are Morgan, Alexis and Anthony. Darin’s father attended the Ohio State University and he was also a member of the wrestling team.

Ohio Valley Duals (East Liverpool)

Wrestling Coach/Athletic Director,

For the 2010-2011 wrestling season, we will be holding a one day dual style set up at East Liverpool High School on December 4, 2010 called "The Ohio Valley Duals". We will have six mats down with duals taking place at the same time on all six mats. There will be a total of 5 rounds with every team wrestling each round. We want to organize this so that your team will not be wrestling against teams that you dual within the season. For example: Beaver Local has a dual with E.L. later in the season. Therefore those two teams would not compete against each other here. All teams from within the OVAC are invited; but we will only accept the first 11 entries. Each team will get five duals. The entrance fee is $150 per school.

We will weigh in between 8:00-8:30, warm up around 9:30, and start the first six duals at 10:00 am sharp. Possible reserve matches will be wrestled while waiting for the longer duals to be completed each round.

There will be breakfast sandwiches, fruit, pizza and other foods and cold drinks available at the concession stand in the field house throughout the event.

Please contact Mr. Shansky, the A.D. at (330)383-6602 or by email RShansky@ELCSD.k12.oh.us or coach Hager at (330)303-8187 or CHager@ELCSD.k12.oh.us.

Ohio Valley wrestling fans will have an opportunity to see college action up close and personal.

On Sunday, Feb. 14, Ohio University and West Virginia University will go head-to-head on the mat at Ohio University-Eastern's campus west of St. Clairsville.

''We've been working on this for a while, probably 3-4 years,'' event coordinator Gordie Longshaw said. ''We want to try and invigorate some life into the sport that is slowly dying off.''

The Bobcats and Mountaineers will clash at 3 p.m. in what is being billed as the ''Battle of the Borders.'' Prior to the match, a youth clinic will be held from Noon-2 p.m. featuring Bridgeport native Bobby Douglas. Following the match, veteran referee Bill Welker will hold a rules and interpretations seminar.

''Our goal is to get as many wrestlers, be it midgets, junior high or varsity, to come to this match,'' Longshaw continued. ''People in the Ohio Valley seldom get to see Division-I wrestling, so this is their opportunity.

''We want the kids to see that there is a future in wrestling. Some schools are dropping the sport and we don't want to see that happen, so we're going to have Bobby Douglas here to endorse the sport.''

The match will have a local connection as former Martins Ferry standout Clay Tucker is a senior member of the Bobcats squad. The four-time sectional, district and Ohio Valley Athletic Conference titlist is currently 20-12 wrestling at 157 pounds.

''We'd like to have a good turnout to root on Clay,'' Longshaw said.

Longshaw said its been quite a while since the Ohio Valley has played host to a college wrestling match. The last one was between WVU and Pitt and it was held at the then-Wheeling Civic Center, which is now WesBanco Arena.

Douglas, who spoke by telephone from Iowa, said he is seeking a couple of sites in the valley for regional training facilities, with the hopes that they can eventually lead to Olympic training sites.

''We have nothing in the eastern United States,'' Douglas said, referring to training facilities. ''We've already looked at two sites, one in Steubenville and the other in Bellaire. We can't call them Olympic training sites until after the USOC meets.

''We want to start with the wrestling clubs and draw the interest. Our main focus is on the juniors. We want to give kids of the Ohio Valley an opportunity to compete for the gold medal some day.

''We're hoping a match like this will stimulate talent for wrestling.''

Tickets are $3 for youth and $5 for adult. A ticket will get you into the clinic, match and rules meeting.

1. All wrestlers will receive an additional 2 pounds because of Harrison Central wrestling on Fri. and the closing of most schools coupled by the inability to practice.

Barnesville’s Crooks shines on mats and in the pool

By SETH STASKEY, T-L Sports Editor

Kody Crooks will admit to anyone who asks his first love when it comes to playing sports is wrestling.

It's understandable seeing he's been grappling since he was a kindergartner.

He achieved one of the goals that every wrestler in the area dreams about during the annual Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Championship two weekends ago by capturing the title in the 160-pound weight class.

"Winning (the OVAC) really felt amazing," Crooks said. "I got eighth as a junior and to come back the next year to win the entire tournament was unreal."

Crooks didn't have much time to thoroughly enjoy the gold medal he captured last month. He had to get back to work quickly for another chance at OVAC honors.

See, along with wrestling and the normal day-to-day activities a senior in high school endures, Crooks is a standout member of the Shamrocks' swimming team.

While wrestling since he was five years old, Crooks picked up swimming during the summer going into his sixth grade year. At the urging of his brother, Kyle Jones, Crooks came out for the school swimming team as a freshman.

"My brother was doing winter and I just kind of picked it up from him," Crooks said. "It really helps keep me in shape (for wrestling). Swimming works every muscle in the body."

Crooks doesn't even practice swimming after the early portion of the year, so he can focus on wrestling. He made the declaration before each season that wrestling is his top priority and that's fine with swimming coach Bobbi Jo Johnson.

Since there was no wrestling tournament for the Shamrocks last weekend, Crooks was cleared to compete in the OVAC swim tournament. He made the most of his opportunity.

Crooks helped the Shamrocks' 200 medley relay team to a school record and key OVAC points last weekend at Steubenville.

"It's been amazing couple of weeks," Crooks said. "To win an OVAC title one week and then help our relay team to points and the score record's been great."

While the OVAC worked out well for everyone, the remainder of the season isn't as crystal clear. Crooks is able to swim with the Shamrocks in the sectional meet at Steubenville this Saturday. However, if the 200 medley team advances to the district, Crooks will not be there.

"Our sectional wrestling tournament is the weekend of the districts," Crooks, a 2009 Division III state wrestling qualifier, said.

There's never been a thought for Crooks to give up swimming either this year or any season to focus on the mats where he owns a 105-47 career record and a 27-2 mark this year.

"I've had no regrets at all about doing both during the winter," Crooks said. "When you start something, you've got to finish it. I enjoy it and I believe you shouldn't give up anything if you like it."

Seeing that Crooks is completely a wrestler first neither Luke Johnson nor Bobbi Jo Johnson (no relation) have had to adjust their practice schedules to help Crooks.

"I don't practice swimming," Crooks said. "It's usually just how the schedules fall and we had a triangular wrestling meet (Wednesday before OVAC) and nothing on the weekend, so I was able to swim."

While admitting that some of his teammates do at times get on him a bit about the double, most of the Shamrocks are supportive of the rare winter double.

"My teammates don't care that much," Crooks said. "They actually think it's pretty cool that I am able to pull it off."

Barring something unforseen, when Crooks concludes his track season this coming spring and secures his Barnesville High School diploma, he'll officially ran out of room on his letterman's jacket. He's also a standout cross country runner during the fall campaign.

Crooks will have earned 16 letters. Four a year for four years is pretty impressive.

"It gets tough to manage my time," Crooks said. "I go to school, practice (whatever season it is), eat supper, work on homework and try to hang out with my friends on the weekends. I just don't have a lot of time."

Crooks also pointed out how big of a role his parents, Kim and Doyle Crooks, play.

"They are very supportive of everything I do," Crooks said. "They are always taking me places and making sure I am everywhere I need to be."

Away from sports, Crooks is an Eagle Scout and a honors student.

Weirton Madonna

Madonna will host Wellsville and Steubenville Catholic Central on Wednesday, February 3 in its final home wrestling match of the season. Wrestling will get underway at 6:00pm.

Madonna, who currently leads the OVAC Class A dual meet standings, will also recognize its six senior wrestlers, Mark Thomas, Eddie Nogay, Michael Kranak, Nick Nero, Max Nogay and Christian McGaughey.

Upstart Mat Tigers

Scott Kinemond was a superb wrestler at Shadyside High School. It appears he may be an even better coach. The former Tiger grappling great and his kiddie corps of matmen raised many an eyebrow this weekend in the OVAC Wrestling Tournament at WesBanco Arena. Kinemond guided his Tigers to their best-ever showing in the mat extravaganza. The Orange & Black captured the OVAC 2-A championship and finished in the top six in the overall team standings, usually reserved for the 4-A and 3-A powers. The Tigers did so with a squad highlighted by freshmen, two of whom advanced to the championship finals. Parkersburg South, to no one's surprise, won the overall championship. But the Tigers were the Cinderella story of the meet event. Wrestling pundits expected the Orange to battle Caldwell and Barnesville for the 2-A crown. No one, however, expected the Tigers to muscle their way into the mix with the big-school elite or to see two frosh vie for championships. Kinemond has laid the groundwork for an enjoyable mat run for many years to come.

Dwayne Bubba Coleman Martins Ferry has passed away. Bubba was a great man, and a good friend! He was a excellent youth coach, and a great example for the younger kids! The wrestling community will miss him greatly!

OVAC Joe Thomas Wrestling Warrior

Coach Joe Thomas OVAC Wrestling Warrior of the Week is John Marshall's junior Monarch 140-pound wrestler Dalton Hall.

Last year, Dalton's record was 31-16. He placed 8th in the Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Tournament and 3rd in the Region I AAA championships, which qualified him for the West Virginia states.

This year Dalton Hall holds a 22-2 record, placing 3rd in the Brooke Classic. He was undefeated in the Park Duals (8-0) and was 4-1 at the Meadowbrook Duals. Dalton currently has 65 career victories.

Congratulations are extended to Dalton Hall - this week's OVAC Wrestling Warrior.

The OVAC Mark Gerrity Wrestling Fan of the Week is John Marshall's KENNY SIMMONS. Kenny is an avid "Monarch" sports fan who rarely misses a wrestling match. With three sons who coach in Marshall County, Kenny says, "I love all sports, but wrestling is the greatest."

The Deaton-Regis Weekly Dual Meet Predictions

There are no dual meet predictions this week because of the gigantic Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Tournament to be held at the Wesbanco Arena on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Don't miss the excitement!

OVAC Joe Thomas Wrestling Warrior

Coach Joe Thomas OVAC Wrestling Warrior of the Week is Bellaire's senior standout Sam Faykus. A former Ohio state qualifier for the Big Reds, Faykus has an overall record of 101-33. He reached the 100-victory milestone at the Wheeling Park Duals.

As a junior, Sam Faykus wrestled at 135 pounds and won the East Liverpool and Shadyside tournaments and placed third at the Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Championships. Faykus finished the season with a runner-up finish at sectionals.

This season, Sam is 16-0 at the 140-pound weight class, winning his division at the Wheeling Park Duals and being crowned champion at the Doan Ford Invitational.

Congratulations are extended to Bellaire's Sam Faykus - this week's OVAC Wrestling Warrior!

The OVAC Mark Gerrity Wrestling Fans of the Week are Bellaire's RANDY AND KELLIE CANTER, the parents of last season's Ohio state runner-up Erik Canter. Dedicated to the Big Reds wrestling program, they continue to follow the Bellaire wrestling at every event. Their daughter, Taylor Canter, is currently a freshman and statistician for the wrestling team.

Ferry’s Roth Is Excited About Future
Purple Riders great now coaching team

By RICK THORP

Staff Writer

WHEELING - He might not have realized it at the time, but when Scott Roth was toiling on the wrestling mats at Martins Ferry High School in the late 1990s, he was preparing himself for a future in coaching.

''I kind of thought I might end up coaching,'' Roth said at last week's Wheeling Park Duals. ''But I didn't know I'd end up back here at Martins Ferry.

''I'm happy about this. This is my alma mater and I want to help keep the program where it needs to be.''

Roth would like nothing more to get the Purple Riders back atop the OVAC, a place the program hasn't been since the 1998 and 1999 seasons, when Roth was competing for coach Jeff Oberdick.

''I've been helping out whenever I could,'' Roth said. ''And this year my work schedule worked out and the opportunity presented itself and everything took off from there.''

The fact Roth had been working with the Martins Ferry program made the transition almost seem less.

''There haven't been a lot of changes,'' he said. ''I have some new ideas in mind ... nothing too crazy. A little tweaking here and there with practice times, when we lift ... things like that.''

Roth, the 2000 David Bierkorette winner as the OVAC Tournament's most outstanding wrestler, certainly has a resume that commands respect.

At Martins Ferry, Roth won a state championship at 145 pounds in his senior season of 2000, was third in Columbus as a junior, and earned two OVAC crowns.

After high school, Roth went on to Cornell where he was a first-team All-Ivy League selection in 2004.

Clearly, Roth has plenty of knowledge to offer young wrestlers. That, combined with the words he soaked in from his prep and college coaches, give Roth some unique insight into the sport.

''I've had some pretty good coaches,'' Roth said. ''I've tried to take a little bit from each of those guys, meld them all together and see what comes out.''

Roth knew what to expect as far as coaching wrestling. But as far as all of the other responsibilities that come with being a coach? Well, he's still getting his feet wet.

''There's a lot more paperwork,'' he said, laughing. ''I've been dealing with these kids for a while, so that hasn't been an adjustment. But things like getting ready for tournaments, seeding meetings and things like that ... there's a lot more going on from a preparation standpoint.''

This season's Purple Riders squad is a team in transition, with a mix of veterans and youth.

Martins Ferry is counting on a group of experience in the middle weight classes to anchor the team's success. Guys like Jeff Oberdick, Ryan Hotlosz and Mike Rose - all of whom placed at last January's Ron Mauck OVAC Championships.

''That's the meat of our lineup,'' Roth said.

Add in other wrestlers like Dominick Driver and Martins Ferry could ne strong once tournament times comes.

Maintaining a strong wrestling tradition is more than just winning, according to Roth. It also includes having an eye to the future.

''We're trying to get the younger kids to wrestle,'' said Roth, who was a member of the Young Purple Riders Program growing up.

''We're trying to promote the sport a little bit ... build a fan base. If you can make it a more popular sport, more and more kids will want to do it.''

What a wrestling run
Oak Glen's Larry Shaw to retire at end of season

Email: "What a wrestling run"

NEW MANCHESTER - For more than three decades, Larry Shaw has been at the helm of one of the most successful high school athletic programs in the country.

This season will be his last.

The Hancock County Board of Education accepted Shaw's resignation Monday as head coach of the Oak Glen wrestling team, effective March 1.

"It's something I felt like I needed to do," the 54-year-old Shaw said. "I kind of decided before the season, and as the season started I was more sure than ever. It's been on my mind for some time, and it's a process I've been working toward.

"I feel like I've done enough. I've been there and done that. I've had great support over the years and been able to accomplish some good things."

The many accomplishments Shaw and the Golden Bears have amassed during his 31-year tenure are nearly too many to list.

Oak Glen has won 13 consecutive West Virginia Class A-AA state titles. Shaw has coached 50 individual state champions, been named OVAC coach of the year 11 times, Class A-AA coach of the year seven times, national wrestling coach of the year by Wrestling USA Magazine, and compiled a staggering record of 324-92-4 in dual meets.

"I'm very humbled by what we've been able to accomplish," Shaw said. "Everyone wants to be successful, but not everyone gets the chance to realize their dreams. I just hope the kids and the community feel proud to have had me as their coach."

After talking with his wife, Shaw decided to inform the team, and the Oak Glen wrestling family at the school's Meet the Team Night.

"I had a private moment with the kids after practice one night," Shaw said. "I didn't want to make a big deal about it, that's not my style. I don't want this to be about me. I've had a wonderful opportunity to work with some great kids."

Oak Glen graduated eight seniors from last year's championship squad, and Shaw is excited for the challenge that lies ahead in his final campaign.

"I wanted to come back and see if we could keep it going with all the turnover," he said. "I want to enjoy this season. Enjoy this last ride and all the moments."

And what will Shaw miss the most after he steps down.

"The wrestling," he said. "I'm going to miss the competition. It's exciting. It's not about winning and losing, but rather the process of getting kids to do something they've struggled with and worked on. To see that happen, the feeling is incredible. I'm going to miss that, but the day-to-day grind and work load I won't."

With the season starting to heat up, Shaw says he has had little time to think about any future plans. He will be staying at Oak Glen where he also works as the library media specialist and oversees the physical fitness program.

"I haven't got a plan, I truly don't," Shaw said. "I've talked about retirement with my wife and the trips we'd like to take. She's been a coach's wife for 30 plus years. We've never really had Christmas or holiday season off. I'm excited about the opportunity to spend time with my wife and family. Just do normal stuff, I guess. It could be good."

Shaw said he believes the Oak Glen wrestling program will continue to thrive after this season. He envisions assistant coach Frank Crain taking over in his absence.

"I think it will continue to be a competitive, viable program," Shaw said. "If (Frank Crain) wants the job, he's got my support. I'm going to lead him through this season and show him the way I do things. I've always wanted to have an assistant coach that I could work on student issues with. He's not me, and that's a good thing. He's going to do things his own way, and that's how it should be."

But for this season, Oak Glen will be led one more time by a coach who has written the school into the record books. And he's hoping to add a few more before he's done.

"Have I had some moments when I wake up and wonder if I made the right decision?" Shaw said. "Sure, I have. But more times than not, I know I made the right choice. I'm writing the final chapter of this phase of my life."

NOTES: Some of Shaw's other accomplishments at Oak Glen include, four three-time state champs, 142 all-state wrestlers, five OVAC crowns and 13 OVAC dual-meet titles.

Wrestling Warrior

The Coach Joe Thomas OVAC Wrestling Warrior of the Week is Oak Glen's senior mat man Joel Paolo. His overall record on the mats is 108 wins and 24 losses.

His accomplishments include a first-place finish in the OVACs last season and a West Virginia state runner-up effort at 135 pounds. He also is a three-time place winner at both the OVACs and the West Virginia state championships. Joel was also a regional champion his sophomore and junior seasons, and second his freshman year.

As a senior, Poalo will be competing at the 140-pound weight class.

Congratulations are extended to Joel Paolo, this week's OVAC Wrestling Warrior.

The OVAC Wrestling fan of the Week is KEITH DUDICK, an Oak Glen booster and team videographer for many years.

The Deaton-Regis Weekly Dual Meet Predictions

Larry Deaton and Jack Regis, two of the Valley's finest mat officials are competing with each other this season, picking the winners of selected weekly matches.

This week's featured matches are Bishop Donahue at Bridgeport (6 p.m.) and Bellaire at Wheeling Park (6 p.m.), which are both on Tuesday.

Deaton picks Bishop Donahue against Bridgeport 39-37 and Bellaire against Wheeling Park 34-32.

Congratulations on placing guys!

Nice write up for Wheeling Park head coach Sean Doyle.

Hey guys just a little update from the Super 32. Our wrestlers should do everything in their power to make this trip. It was very well run and the best competition you will find in the country. You could look around at any time and find a coach from a major division one school. It's a great opportunity to get exposure if you're looking to continue in college.

As for us (Wheeling Park), it was a fairly good trip. Our junior high wrestlers Dylan Taylor and Dalton Macri were both able to place. Dalton lost first round to a wrestler from Brandon High School in Florida fought all the way back winning five in a row before dropping a tough match to the same wrestler for 3rd and 4th. Dalton is an eighth grader that we can't wait to get to the high school. Dylan Taylor went 3-3 and took 8th. Dylan won his first two matches before dropping his quarterfinal match. He won his next to place but dropped his last two. It was a great experience for both guys to build off of.

As for Kyle, it was definitely short of what his goals were. Kyle dropped a tough match in his first match of the day to a wrestler from Texas 3-2. He then buckled up and took us for a ride..Kyle was able to put together a seven match winning streak before dropping a very tough 6-4 match in the placing round. His loss came to Cadet National Champion Whitford of Illinois who proceeded to win two more and take fourth. Kyle beat a number of nationally ranked individuals along the way. To give everyone an idea of his weight class, here is a list of wrestlers that did not place:

Sean Dolan (#9 ranked Senior-signed with North Carolina St.)
Tanner Moon (#5 ranked Senior-signed with Virginia)
Bryan Whitt (#6 ranked Senior)
Josh Fisher (#9 ranked Junior)

Next year, it would be great to see a good group from the ovac there!

John Marshall Mike Cain/Wrestling founder dies

FRANK JOLLEY

Staff Writer

Mike Cain, who founded the wrestling program at South Lake High School, died Sept. 6 while competing at the Veterans World Championships in Kouvola, Finland.

Cain was 52 years old.

According to a press release from the championships, Cain collapsed during his opening-round match. He received immediate medical assistance, the released stated, but those providing care could not revive him.

Cain was competing in the 286-pound weight class in Division D, which was for wrestlers between the ages of 51 and 55 years of age. There were three wrestlers in his weight class and Cain was posthumously awarded the Bronze Medal, which was accepted by his teammates.

Cain formed South Lake's wrestling program in 2006 and coached the team for two seasons before the program was discontinued in 2008 for budgetary reasons. When Cain began to build the program, more than 100 student-athletes -- boys and girls -- signed up to become charter members of the team.

"It was unbelievable," Cain said in 2006. "We had 112 kids sign up. Schools with established programs rarely attract more than 30 wrestlers. That was enough proof that (this) was the right time to launch a team."

Two members of Cain's first team, Will and Brian Allen, represented the school at the Class 2A-Region 2 tournament in 2007.

In 2008, Angelica Waaser, the only female in the South Lake program, finished sixth at the state finals.

Cain was a two-time state champion in West Virginia (1974 and 1975) and was able bench press 650 pounds and squat more than 700 pounds. He was active in club wrestling, primarily through his membership in USA Wrestling and the Florida Amateur Wrestling Association.

In 2007, Cain set four world powerlifting records at the Southern Powerlifting Federation's World Powerlifting Championships.

Earlier this year, Cain competed at the Beach National Championships in Rochester, N.Y., winning the Veterans title. He was a Veterans Nationals freestyle champion in 2008 and a member of the 2008 U.S. Veterans World team.

Attention Wrestling Coaches:

With the wrestling season fast approaching, it is time to move on making final arrangements for the 2009 Richard Kirkland Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Harrison Central Jr. High in Scio.

With the addition of more schedule points (17 pts) to the Jr. High Schedule last year, this tournament may be just what your team needs.

Instead of making coaches drive to Scio for a seeding meeting, we will be seeding wrestlers based on criteria. Criteria will be based on season record and tournament finishes on the year. We think that criteria based seeding will be just as effective in separating the top wrestlers for the finals, and it will be much more convenient for coaches.

The date for this year’s tournament is December 19th.

This event is one of the most competitive one day tournaments in Eastern Ohio .

Last years teams included:

Buckeye Local, Cambridge, Claymont, Columbus DeSales, Conotton Valley, Dover, Follansbee, Harding, Harrison Central, Indian Creek, Malvern, River, New Philadelphia, Ridgewood, St. Clairsville, Sandy Valley, Springfield

Please let me know if you are planning to attend so I can get your AD's a contract. We will accept teams until we reach the maximum spaces available.

Respectfully,

He played in the conference, coached in the conference, been on committees, currently serves on the conference's Executive Board and is also the director for the annual Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Championship.

The current Noble Local Schools Superintendent of Schools has seen and probably almost done it all within the OVAC, but now as tough as it is to believe, he's got a new role.

Doyle became the latest president of the OVAC earlier this summer, replacing Dr. Dianna Vargo who served her two-year term and now becomes the conference's past president.

"I am excited about the position and following Dianna who did a great job," Doyle said. "I think we'll just continue to do great things for the kids."

OVAC Executive Secretary Tom Rataiczak is looking forward to the next two years and working hand-in-hand with Doyle.

"Dan will be a tremendous asset to the conference and its future," Rataiczak said. "He's been active in every phase, and now it's his turn to run the show."

The OVAC is a huge entity, including 47 schools stretching as far east as Morgantown to as far north as Rogers to Beverly in the south and Zanesville in the west. All told, it includes nearly 18,000 student-athletes in 15 sports as well as all-star games in six sports.

"Dan's work with the wrestling program has allowed him to have a good idea of championships and all-star games of what is expected and needed," Rataiczak said. "The next two years will be challenging ones as we continue to grow and improve, but I have great faith in Dan's leadership and look forward to his ideas and suggestions."

That's not to mention the OVAC Hall of Fame, OVAC Museum, Sports World Outreach Program, youth camps, Banquet of Champions and scholarship program.

"The conference is a whole lot of people," Doyle said. "My focus as far as this position is to try to acknowledge as many kids as we can for their accomplishments and possibly help them as they move on into further aspects of their life is where I am coming from."

Doyle expects to be highly visible in the OVAC community at events and functions much like Vargo was during her presidency and as is Rataiczak.

"I am a visible guy, and I like being with the kids in my school district, and you'll most likely see me a lot of places," Doyle said. "That's a major part of the role."

Doyle will serve this school year as well as the 2010-11 school year as the president before he becomes the past president.

During the reign, Doyle wants to make sure the new initiatives and/or programs implemented in the OVAC are continued to run as well as they have thus far.

"We want to make our programs as good as they can be," Doyle said.

One of the latest ventures of the OVAC that Doyle is really excited about is the Varsity Board, which will include two students from each member school coming together for leadership work and service work.

"I am really looking forward to seeing the students get involved," Doyle offered.

In the past couple of the years, the OVAC has expanded to its current number of schools with the addition Morgantown Trinity, Parkersburg South and Zanesville Rosecrans. While no plans are in the direct works, Doyle doesn't think the board is ready to slam the door on additional expansion.

"There's been some talk that 50 might be the magic number," Doyle said. "That would give us five divisions of 10, and that would give us another opportunity to acknowledge more kids and schools for their accomplishments."

One of the challenges that Doyle is looking forward to embarking into is trying to make sure all of the schools in the OVAC realize that they are a part of the conference.

"For me to say that's not a challenge wouldn't be me telling the truth," Doyle said.

"The Wheeling area is basically the center of the conference, and that's what people on the fringes of the conference need to realize. We understand the economics and issues of the athletes, so a lot of things are going to come to the center of the conference."

Speaking of economics, the OVAC is on stable financial footing and the last two presidents Jerry Narcisi and Vargo have gotten the ball rolling on long-term financial planning and Rataiczak expects that to continue and be fully in place by the end of Doyle's term.

"Dan's already been instrumental in developing a financial plan for the conference," Rataiczak said. "Although we are on solid footing, it's imperative that we start doing some long-range planning to insure a sound future."

Doyle - a former administrator, teacher and coach at Buckeye Local - thinks his role as presidency will demonstrate just how committed the OVAC is to all of its membership. He's the first OVAC President from a school district west of St. Clairsville.

"Hopefully, people will realize that the schools on the fringe are just as important as the schools in the heart," Doyle said. "Those schools have to speak up and get involved."

Doyle will continue in his role as the director of the OVAC Wrestling Tournament, which is slated for January 21-23 at WesBanco Arena once again. He won an individual title as a competitor, two overall tournament titles as coach at Buckeye Local and earned the distinction of Mr. Mat in 2005.

"I think the two positions will complement each other really well," Doyle said. "The names at the top may change, but the people of the conference who make the events special are already here and deep-rooted. They and the kids are the ones who make this conference so great."

The OVAC Executive Board is comprised of: Doyle, Vargo, Narcisi, Rataiczak, Walt Skaggs, Dan Angalich, Jeff Crosier, Corey Murphy, Doug Tush, Ed Cihy, Kelly Rine, Rick Leach, Tom Bechtel, Steve Wojcik, John Howell, Don Zinni and Peggi Bannan.

"We have one of the best executive boards I have ever had the pleasure of working with," Rataiczak said.

"Each and everyone of them knows what the conference is, what it needs to become better and is dedicated to the youth and athletic programs of our member schools."

Doyle - who is a 1973 Wheeling Central and 1977 Allegheny College graduate - couldn't agree more.

"This board's focus is what's best for our kids," Doyle admitted. "Every member on the board makes decisions and are active in discussions. As long as the board's like that, the OVAC will keep Tom Rataiczak and we'll be making the best decisions. If the decisions we make don't work out, we'll try it for so many years and change it."

Prezzia heading to Freestyle National Tourney in Fargo

By SETH STASKEY, T-L Sports Editor

POSTED: June 21, 2009

By SETH STASKEY

Times Leader Sports Editor

St. Clairsville junior to be Dominic Prezzia loves wrestling.

More importantly, he loves a challenge.

That's what made it a no-brain decision to enter freestyle wrestling tournaments this summer, which have taken him all over the northern part of Ohio.

However, that's just the start of his summer travels.

After finishing second at 145 pounds in the Freestyle State Wrestling Championship, Prezzia has earned himself the right to represent Team Ohio at the Junior National Freestyle Tournament in Fargo, North Dakota.

"I think it's going to be a lot of fun, and I am really excited about the opportunity," Prezzia said during a phone interview. "There's going to be a lot of good wrestling and a very good experience."

Prezzia - who has never been to Fargo, N.D. - qualified after posting a 4-1 mark during the state tournament at Wadsworth High School last weekend.

He earned the right to compete in the state meet after wrestling at 152 pounds in the first-round qualifying tournament at Copley, which is near Akron.

"With each tournament, he's getting a better feel of freestyle," said St. C. head coach Jay Michael. "He's adapting more and more to it as he becomes aware of where he's at on the mat."

The wrestling competition wasn't necessarily the toughest part for Prezzia. It was adapting to the freestyle method, which isn't seen too much in the Ohio Valley unlike other parts of the Buckeye State.

"There aren't many kids in this area who do freestyle or serious summer wrestling," Michael lamented. "They do it all through Ohio in the western and northern areas, but this region lacks exposure that some of these kids get week in and week out. It's a thrill for me to have a kid qualify back to the nationals and having kids who are hungry and have the desire to be successful."

During the prep wrestling season, Greco-Roman is used and the variations in the scoring the ability to lock hands is something that have been the toughest adjustment for Prezzia.

"It's a little tough to catch onto at first," Prezzia admitted. "It's tough to adapt to, but it's a lot of fun, and personally I like it better than regular wrestling."

Along with his summer training at St. C., the one-sport standout works out in Cannonsburg, Pa. every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer as well as taking part in a tournament in McConnellsville, Pa.

The all-Ohioan from a year ago has plenty of resources available right in his own training room.

Michael has coached a handful of grapplers who've qualified for the national tournament, including former Ohio state champion and Division I All-American David Bertolino who is currently working toward earning a spot on the USA National Team for the World Freestyle Championships.

"Bertolino actually went to this tournament (in Fargo) twice and didn't place, so that gives you an idea of the level of competition," Michael said.

St. C. assistant Zac Schuler - who wrestled for Michael at Buckeye before transfering to St. C. for his senior season - also took part, winning eight matches in his appearance, but it still wasn't enough to earn a place.

Prezzia has already begun picking their brains.

"Coach Michael and Zac really know the sport and have already told me what to expect in terms of training and in the matches," Prezzia continued. "I couldn't ask for a whole lot more than the help those guys have given me."

Michael has indicated he's going to make the trip to Fargo just for a level of moral support more than anything.

"It's a long, grueling weekend," Michael said. "I've been there several times, and it's nice to have someone with you, who's been there before because when you walk into an indoor football practice facility and see 25 mats down, it can be kind of intimidating."

Team Ohio will gather to begin preparations in the middle of July in Lakewood at St. Edward High School. From there, they'll travel to Black River Falls, Wi. to practice at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and then on July 22 will finish the trip into Fargo. The three-day tournament opens the following day.

While non-committal on his weight class for this winter, Prezzia already has his goals set when the Red Devils' season resumes in the middle of November.

"My goal is to win the state championship," Prezzia said matter of factly. "I came up short this year and I have already set that as my goal. I am not looking as much at the OVAC, but gearing everything toward winning the state championship."

The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Hall of Fame will welcome four multi-talented student athletes as the honorees from the 1980s and 1990s.

Barnesville's Tim Moxley and Steubenville's Charlie Keenan, both football and wrestling stars who entertained prep mat fans to one of the most anticipated OVAC Wrestling Tournament finals, are the well-deserved honorees for the 1980s while Toronto's Otis Winston and Paden City's David Bosley gained the nod for their excellence in the 1990s.

The ultra-successful quartet joins a host of induction candidates already announced for the sixth annual OVAC Hall of Fame extravaganza.

Previously announced enshrinees for 2009 include coaches Gene Ford and Henry ''Hank'' Lazasz, veteran official Bill Paolisso, Richard ''Dick'' Edge (OVAC 'Family'), John Sorrenti (Media) and Dr. Vincent ''Vince'' Monseau (OVAC 'Contributor').

Athletes tabbed so far include: Harold (Doc) Daugherty and Jim Hanna of Weir High and the late Bill Jobko of Bridgeport. Daugherty was selected for the 1940s decade while Hanna and Jobko are recognized from the 1950s decade.

The 1960s honorees are Tim Anderson of Follansbee and Mark Thompson of Mt. Pleasant while the 1970s will showcase Marty Coyne of Linsly Military Institute and Mike Dawson of Magnolia.

Also scheduled to be honored that night will be the five OVAC ''Legends'' for 2009 - Tom Kinkade, Fred Negus, Charley Seabright, Nick Skorich and Moffat Storer.

This year's OVAC Hall of Fame Banquet will be held Saturday, Aug. 22 at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.

The OVAC Hall of Fame's permanent display is located inside WesBanco Arena and is sponsored by Bob Robinson Chevrolet.

Here's a capsule look at the four latest Hall of Fame selections:

Charles Keenan (Steubenville, Class of 1985)

Be it on the football field, wrestling mat or in the classroom, Keenan prided himself on excellence. And in all three areas of his life, Keenan was nothing short of sensational.

Keenan was the cornerstone of the Big Red's initial state football playoff championship, captaining the 1984 juggernaut. He led the Reno Saccoccia-coached gridders to a 13-0 season that fall.

He established school records for tackles and sacks en route to being named the state's Division II Lineman of the Year. The first-team all-stater was also accorded honorable mention All-American plaudits.

He was named captain of the all-OVAC and all-Eastern District teams and was selected to play in the OVAC and Ohio North-South All- Star games.

The relentless lineman was a three-year starter for Steubenville that went 30-0 in the regular season and 33-2 overall. His great play earned him the distinction of being named the co-captain of the 1980s All-Decade Football Team selected by The Intelligencer.

His Big Red success proved a springboard to a football scholarship to The Ohio State University. He was a letterman for the Scarlet & Gray.

Keenan was just as impressive on the prep mats. He won a pair of OVAC titles, capturing the 175-pound class as a sophomore followed by the 185-pound crown as a junior before grabbing the brass ring as the Ohio state kingpin that winter.

Keenan opted to move up to heavyweight as a senior, preparing him for the rigors of being an Ohio State football player.

That move to heavyweight set up a match against Barnesville High's mammoth and fellow OSU football recruit Tim Moxley. The two met in the OVAC final in 1985, attracting possibly the largest crowd at a wrestling match in Ohio Valley annals, with Moxley pulling out an epic 11-8 triumph. It snapped Keenan's 45-match winning streak.

Keenan was awarded the George Kovalick Scholarship that year. He finished his Big Red wrestling career with a sparkling 110-18 record.

Keenan also opted to wrestle at Ohio State, earning two varsity letters in the sport.

Not to be lost in his athletic achievements were his academic accomplishments. He was the Steubenville High valedictorian, compiling a 4.0 GPA. He went on to earn master's and doctoral degrees.

After receiving his OSU degree, Keenan returned home and served as a teacher, administrator and coach at his alma mater. He now is a school superintendent in northern Ohio.

Tim Moxley (Barnesville, Class of 1985)

A heavyweight in every sense of the word

Tim Moxley came up huge in both football and wrestling for the Shamrocks. He enjoyed a star-studded and champion-filled four athletic years at the western Belmont County school.

Moxley garnered all-Ohio honors in football for the Red & Green while also grabbing a pair of state wrestling championships.

The 6-foot-7, 300-pounder parlayed his prep achievements into a football scholarship at The Ohio State University.

Moxley was a three-year starter on the Shamrocks' line. He helped guide them to a 17-3 mark during his last two seasons and the OVAC Class AA championship in 1983.

He was accorded a bevy of first team all-star honors for his senior season play. They included all-Valley, all-OVAC, all-Eastern District and all-Ohio Associated Press. He was a second-team all-Ohio United Press International honoree.

As a junior, Moxley was a second-team All-Valley selection.

Moxley carved out an even more glittering prep resume in the mat sport. The powerful heavyweight captured a pair of Ohio state championships, matching the number of OVAC crowns to his credit. As a senior, he led the Shamrocks to the overall OVAC Tournament title while also being accorded the prestigious Bierkortte Award.

Moreover, the Moxley-led matmen of Coach Darrell Davis captured the state tournament team title in 1985.

His OVAC title matches against Keenan are legendary. Moxley handed Keenan his only two losses in the OVAC event.

Moxley was so impressive on the mat that he was selected to the USA's Scholastic All-America Wrest-ling ''Dream Team'' for 1984-85.

He was third in the OVAC as a sophomore.

At Ohio State, Moxley was all football. He moved into the Buckeyes' starting lineup as a sophomore, after seeing playing time in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman. He started seven out of the Bucks' final eight games as a sophomore.

As a junior, he started all 11 games and continued that strong play as a senior. He played in two bowl games for Ohio State - the 1987 Cotton Bowl and the 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl.

Moxley was selected by the Washington Redskins in the ninth round of the 1990 NFL Draft.

Moxley currently resides in Longwood, Fla. He is vice president of operations for a construction firm in central Florida.

Tim's wife, Maureen, is a Cleveland native and a graduate of Mentor Lake Catholic High School. They have three children: Madeline (14), Jacob (12) and Benjamin (9).

David Bosley (Paden City,

Class of 1993)

Paden City High School prides itself on quality basketball. To that end, David Bosley is on the short list of great Wildcats.

Bosley was a scoring terror at the tiny Wetzel County School. The scoring also translated into a wealth of Wildcats winning as they advanced to the West Virginia state tournament in 1991 and 1992.

Coach Bob Burton's Cats also grabbed the OVAC crowns in the 1992 and 1993 seasons. All told, Paden City won 81 times and lost 12 during Bosley's four-year career.

While the Wildcats were winning, Bosley was scoring. He finished his prep days with 1,996 points, including a senior campaign in which he netted 29.2 points, 7.8 assists and seven rebounds per start.

Those lofty numbers earned him the captaincy of the all-state team.

He was also captain of the all-OVAC squad that year and was honored by the Dapper Dans for outstanding achievement.

During his sophomore and junior seasons, the 5-11 guard earned all-OVAC and all-state honors as Paden City advanced to the state tournament each winter. He gained a starting berth with Burton's charges just five games into his freshman season.

Bosley also made use of his superb athleticism to star on the football field for Mike Flannery. The four-year football letterman sparkled as a quarterback, earning all-OVAC first-team honors as a junior and senior.

He completed 113 of 221 passes for 1,271 yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing for 489 yards and seven additional scores as a senior. Bosley was named to the West Virginia Sports Ultimate All-State Football Team.

As a junior, he completed 69 of 112 tosses for 995 yards and eight touchdowns. He also rushed for 559 yards and six TDs. Bosley was also a stellar punter, averaging 36.1 yards on 29 boots.

Bosley also made his presence felt in track and field. He was an OVAC long jump champion and also was a state runnerup in the 300-meter hurdles

Bosley took his vast basketball skills to the next level, earning a scholarship to LSU in the rugged Souteastern Conference. He played four years for the legendary Dale Brown, who retired after Bosley's senior campaign.

In Bosley's final regular-season game, he netted the final four points of the game to give Brown his first triumph against Nolan Richardson's Arkansas Razorbacks since they joined the SEC in 1991.

Brown presented Bosley the game ball.

Bosley was awarded the LSU's Director Cup for academic excellence and was recognized as an SEC Scholar Athlete.

Otis Winston (Toronto High School, Class of 1992)

Winston is synonymous with Ohio Valley high jumping. He remains the measuring stick for prep jumping greatness.

Winston, however, was more than an accomplished high jumper. He possessed multi-faceted skills both in track as well as basketball.

While becoming the the Ohio Valley's first 7-foot leaper, he was equally as dominating on the hardwood, lettering four years for the Red Knights, while garnering first-team all-Ohio honors as a senior.

Winston is still the Red Knights' all-time leading scorer via his 1,453 points. As a senior, the athletic forward carried his team to an OVAC AAA crown thanks, in part, to his 31.1 points, 14 rebounds, six steals and six assists per game.

He was the model of consistency as reflected in a 20-game streak of 30 points or more. His single game high was 46. He was both the Eastern District and District 5 Player of The Year and starred in the Ohio North-South Game, scoring 18 points in a winning cause.

As a junior, he averaged 25 points a game and was first-team all-OVAC. He also enjoyed a superb sophomore season, gaining first-team all-OVAC honors with his 18 points a game.

For the Red Knight thinclads, the 6-5 Winston was a three-time state champion, twice in the high jump and in the long jump as a senior with a 22-10 effort. He captured the state high jump title as a sophomore with a 6-10 jump followed by his record-setting state leap of 6-11 the following June.

His athletic achievements led him to Columbus where he starred in both sports for The Ohio State University.

Winston ear-ned All-American honors at OSU in track, winning the Big Ten high jumping title four times, twice outdoors and twice indoors. He finished third in the NCAA as a freshman with his still Ohio State record of 7-4.5. Winston competed in the 1996 Olympic trials.

He was no slouch for the Buckeyes in basketball, earning a starting berth as a junior, specializing as a defensive stopper. He served the Buckeyes as co-captain as a senior and finished his career with a 17-point outing against hated-rival Michigan. He was a three-year OSU basketball letterman.

Winston went on to play professional basketball in Russia, and still lives in the Columbus area.

The ordained minister and his wife, Starr, have two daughters: Promise Starr Winston and Reign Dawan Winston.

Otis owns his own production company and is a bank computer technician. He also finds time to coach track at New Albany High School
