34th Sheridan Wrestling Invitational 1/13/07
It was a grind for wrestlers at the 34th Sheridan Invitational where many wrestled through five competitive matches on the day. This edition of the Sheridan Invitational featured some of the best we have ever seen. Cambridge battled their way to a Championship in a field that included five state place-winners, 15 district place-winners, 42 district qualifiers, and nine returning champions. Cambridge’s Sean Mahley (14-0) wrestled his way to the Jay White Outstanding Wrestler Award by defeating State Qualifier Rodney Tharp (13-2) of Fairfield Union 5-2 in the 152 lb. championship. The 152 lb. weight class featured six district qualifiers and nine wrestlers with a winning record. Sheridan’s Tieler Severance (18-6) won the most pins award with four pins in a total of 1:50. Severance also wrestled his way to a championship at 125 with a dominating 11-3 victory over Ohio State Place-winner Justin Cartwright (21-2) of Licking Valley.

At 103, Alex Minnard (15-0) or Fairfield Union defended his title from a season ago with at Tech Fall of Cambridge’s Andrew Bertubin (17-6). At 119, state place-winner Paul Rose (22-3) of Cambridge won by Tech Fall over Kolten Stemen (25-4) of Teays Valley. Rose picked up his 100th career victory in the tournament. At 135, Jon Ray (23-5) of Cambridge won 9-4 over Sheridan state qualifier Andrew Gaskins (19-4). Clay Brassfield (18-4) of Lakewood won the 140 lb. weigh class in dominating fashion with an 11-4 victory over Newark’s Jason Bromberg (16-10). Clay also picked up his 100 career victory during the tournament. Sheridan state qualifier Logan Severance (18-3) won at 145 with a solid 10-4 victory of state qualifier Russell McFadden (17-4) of Circleville. Severance also defeated Vincent Warren’s Franky Lee 11-7. Lee is a Virginia state place-winner who transferred to Warren High School. At 160, State place-winner Kasey McCurdy (20-0) of Fairfield Union defended his title with an 8-0 major decision of Barnesville’s Charley Fritter (19-7).

Three of the last four weight classes featured Cambridge wrestlers who won Championships to seal their team victory over a persistent Sheridan General Team. The Generals had 13 wrestlers place in the top six to keep them in the hunt. At 171, Chad Teague (19-5) won 11-9 over Circleville’s Mike Roeder (17-5). 189 lb. state qualifier Kirk Wetherell (23-3) pinned Sheridan freshman Andrew Carpenter (18-7) in: 35. At 285, State place-winner John Nicholozakes (23-2) gave Jessie Modesitt of Newark (21-1) his first loss of the season with a 6-4 decision.
Special thanks to the tournament sponsors, table workers and volunteers who made the 34th edition of the Sheridan Invitational one to remember.
