MONTOUR, Pa. - For the third year in a row the Oak Glen wrestling team has gone out of state - Pennsylvania this time - and captured the Montour Spartan Classic Tournament. The Golden Bears racked up 250.5 points to win the 17-team event that concluded Saturday. The tournament began on Friday and finished Saturday evening.

Oak Glen was the only school participating from out of state. The Bears won the event last year with five individual champions and with a similar point total - 249. Oak Glen had five champions this year too: Brandon Miller at 125, Rhett Northcraft at 160, Chris Stevens at 189, Cody Potts at 215 and David Foltz at 171. Miller, Northcraft, Stevens and Potts were two-time champions.

The Bears placed 11 wrestlers in the 14 weight classes. They also had two runners-up, three third places and one fourth placer.

Potts, a senior, won his 100th career match during the tournament.

Butler finished second in team points with 171, followed by Seneca Valley (136), West Allegheny (135), Ambridge (116) and Laurel Highlands (108).

Ethan Dray (at 103) and Dirk Baker (at 130) placed second; Jessie Mahan (at 140), Cody Miller (at 152) and Bryan Rowland (at 275) each placed third and Brandon Davis was fourth at 119. Davis was first at 103 last year.

Bears coach Larry Shaw was impressed with how his team performed. "We were better this weekend. More relaxed," said Shaw. "Bryan Rowland deserves recognition. This is the first time he has placed (in a tournament). He put together a series of solid matches."

Northcraft's finals match Saturday against T.J. Pringle of Ambridge (he won handily, 12-6) was voted second most exciting match of the tournament by the coaches.

Finals highlights

*After a scoreless first period, Dave Foltz, 171, was put on his back in the second period of his match with Jamie Chaffin of Summit Academy. He was losing 5-2 at the end of the second. In the third he scored a takedown and back points, and gave up an escape to tie the match at 6. With 21 seconds to go, he caught Chaffin in a double-leg takedown that drove them off the mat, but Foltz’ toes remained in bounds and he was awarded the takedown. He gave Chaffin an escape in the final seconds to win 8-7.

*Chris Stevens at 189 attacked at the opening whistle of his championship match, using a standing merkle to take down Kevin Rosinsky of Ambridge and put him on his back, pinning him in 29 seconds.

*Undefeated senior Cody Potts, 215, recorded his 100th career win over an Oliver wrestler on Friday night. His big challenge of the tournament came in the semi-finals when he was put on his back in the second period by Codie Noga of Avella. Down 5-2, he had to fight his way back by giving escapes and taking Noga down until the score was knotted at 7. With seconds to go in the match, Potts scored another takedown and put Noga on his back. The referee called the fall at the buzzer, but when the other coach complained the clock had not started, Potts was awarded a 13-7 major decision.

Potts won the Spartan tournament - as he did the OVAC last month - defeating Rick Dlubak of Ambridge 2-1 with an escape in an overtime rideout.

*In the 103 championships, OGHS freshman Ethan Dray was evenly matched with Corey James of West Allegheny. James was awarded a takedown as the buzzer sounded at the end of the first period, and those were the only points in the match.

*At 130, Dirk Baker lost 10-4 to Greg Hogan of Laurel Highland in the finals.

*For third, Jessie Mahan decisioned Frank Mullet of Seneca Valley 4-0, Cody Miller pinned Aaron Pascazi of Butler at 4:19, and Bryan Rowland major decisioned Jimmie Muraco of Riverview 12-2.

Next up for the Bears is a tri-match at home Feb. 12 against Brooke and Weir. The Oak Glen Middle School wrestling program, and its wrestlers, will be recognized
