BARNESVILLE INVITATIONAL

Claymont scored 317.5 points to win the Barnesville Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

The Mustangs finished with five champions in the two-day tournament and the 317.5 points was not only a school record at Claymont, but a tournament record in the 42 year-old event at Barnesville.

Kyle Warner led the way for Claymont in winning the 152-pound title and getting an award for most pins in the least time. In four matches, Warner had four pins in a total of 1 minute, 40 seconds, including a 50 second fall in the finals. His first two matches on Friday lasted 10- and 12-seconds.

Dustin Warner (106), Cody Burcher (113), Luke Langdon (120) and Trent Johnson (220) also won titles for Claymont, while Drew Dillon (126), Taylor Peters (160), Colt Crall (182), Garrett Harding (195) and William Corso (285) were all second.

Drew Avery (132) and Matt Dennis (170) both finished third.

“I thought we put on a great performance,” said Claymont coach Eric Toukonen. “We were aggressive and we really improved in our weight classes. Now we have to get ready for a big night on Friday.”

John Marshall finished second with 173 points.

Sandy Valley (143.5) finished third in the tournament with Sam Groff winning an individual championship.

The 182-pound junior won his 100th career match in the semifinals.

Evan Offenberger (106), Andrew Lidderdale (138), Cole Sickafoose (160) and Jordan Kirkman (195) all finished third and Joe Newman (120) was fourth.

Joe Newsome won the heavyweight title to lead Tusky Valley.

Josh Wallace (145) finished second, while Jakob Rice-Spellman (170) was third and Codie Milhone (160) was fourth.

Conotton Valley’s Sky Renard was fourth at 138 pounds.

BARNESVILLE - Claymont's Mustangs have staged another stampede through western Belmont County.

The Tuscarawas County combine captured another title Saturday at Barnesville's 42nd annual Doan Ford Wrestling Invitational.

Claymont compiled an ultra-impressive 317 points, far outdistancing runnerup John Marshall which totaled 173. Sandy Valley's 143 points were good for third place ahead of Caldwell's Redskins which came in with 135.

St. Clairsville's Red Devils compiled 128 points for a fifth place showing with Martins Ferry and Tuscarawas Valley scoring 91 apiece for a sixth place tie.

While Claymont boasted five individual champions, the host Shamrocks produced a pair of first place achievers - 126-pounder Clay Crosier and 145-pounder Mason Plumly.

"I'm pleased. I thought we fared well," Barnesville coach Jayson Stephen said. "Our kids realize how tough this tournament is. Anytime you can place in the top four, you have to be happy."

Crosier gutted out a 6-4 decision victory against Claymont's Drew Dillon for the 126-pound crown. Plumly, meanwhile, was a 12-4 major decision victor against Tusky Valley's Josh Wallace in the 145-pound matchup.

Only other area champion was St. Clairsville's Dalton Nolte, the tournament's only individual champion who wasn't top seeded.

Nolte and Mustangs' top-seeded Taylor Peters went toe to toe for the match's six-minute duration with Nolte holding on for a 1-0 victory.

St. C.'s Seth Benge advanced to the 170-pound title match where he was pinned by Caldwell's Kale Rayner in 1:50.

The Red Devils also produced a pair of consolation round third place victors in 120-pound Angelo Curcione and heavyweight Corey Ernest.

"We had some ups and downs but did have six kids earn placements," Red Devils coach Joel Sansone. "A great job by Dalton who gave us a huge win. We'll go back home, work on conditioning and prepare for our tournament at the end of the month."

Ferry qualified two grapplers for championship matches, though both came up short.

Veteran Damon Outward was pinned by Claymont's Cody Burcher for the 113-pound title. At 120, C.J. Williams was decisioned by the Mustangs' Luke Langdon by a 9-3 count.

"Overall, we have a young team which took a few lumps," Riders' coach Scott Roth said. "Both Damon and C.J. lost to a couple of state placers but they'll be fine. We like coming (out here) each year. You get an early feel for what lies ahead in the season. We're just going to work hard to get better."

At 152, Shadyside's Alex Quinn saw his championship bid cut short by Claymont's savvy Kyle Warner who took home the tournament's Peck Award for most pins in the shortest time frame.

Warner captured all four victories via the fall in rapid-fire clockings of 50, 28, 12 and 10 seconds, respectively.

Monroe Central landed one third place with 152-pound Zac Potts posting a 3-2 decision of St. C.'s Fabio Cracolici.

Finals will be broadcasted live around 4 or 5PM www.wbtclive.com
