STEUBENVILLE — Winning a championship is not an easy thing to do, and repeating as a champion is all the more difficult.

Saturday, the Big Red wrestling team hosted the annual Steubenville Kiwanis Wrestling Tournament, and Big Red was looking to claim its second straight Kiwanis tournament Title.

Last year, Big Red edged East Liverpool to claim the title, and this year Big Red was once again able to hold off the Potters as Big Red once again won the the team title to claim back-to-back championships.

Big Red placed first with 221 points, East Liverpool was second with 206.5 points and Brooke was third with 205 points. Edison took with 190.5 points, Madonna was fifth (96), Catholic Central was sixth (67), Weir was seventh (65.5) and West Geauga was eighth (50).

“Of course I like it back-to-back, but I think the teams were definitely a lot closer,” Big Red head coach Mike Blackburn said. “Brooke was right in the hunt. Edison was up there with their five champs. Last year was a two dog race with us and East Liverpool. This year came down to that last round, and we just had more placers and points and we edged out a couple good teams.”

Big Red won the team title, but Edison senior sensation Andy Stine stole the show.

Stine, who has won more than 100 matches in his career, claimed the individual championship at 135 by knocking off Brooke’s James McFarland by a score of 3-2. McFarland has also won more than 100 matches in his career, and McFarland entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in the state of West Virginia at 135 pounds.

As a result of his fine performance throughout the tournament, Stine was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Wrestler.

“This is his third MVP of the season,” Edison head coach Bill Koehnlein said. “He is 23-0. He was the MVP at Brooke. He was the MVP at Kalin. He was the MVP here. The Kalin Tournament was up in Cleveland Normandy.”

Five of the eight teams had wrestlers win individual titles.

The Wildcats led the way with five individual champions. Danny Costa (130), Stine, Chris Brancker (140), Nick Stine (145) and Daniel Goodwin all won titles for Edison.

Big Red and Brooke each had three wrestlers win individual championships.

Chris Tingler (103), Salem James (152) and Mark Markakis (189) all won titles for Big Red. For the Bruins, Brent Fluharty (112), Josh Sizemore (171) and Drake Kowcheck (285) all won titles.

A pair of Potters won titles — Preston Foster (119) and Cagney Springer (125).

Zac Costlow (215) won the lone title for the Crusaders.

“We wrestled fairly well today,” first-year Catholic Central head coach Aaron Henry said. “The season has been going pretty well for us. We have got some strong guys, especially at 215 and 189 with Zac Costlow and Josh Costlow. We have got two freshmen, and they have come a long way since the start of the season. We also have Justin Mosti, Matt Robinson, Pat Bortz and Brendan Talbott. They are all solid wrestlers.”

Madonna head coach Mike Nogay said his wrestlers did a good job throughout the tournament.

“I thought they did fairly well,” he said. “We worked hard in the room, especially the last four days, and we reaped some of the benefits of that. We lost a few close matches, 3-2, in one of the finals and a couple of others.

“Jimmy Deter really stepped up at 125. I think he was the most pleasant surprise for us. He placed in second at that weight class. He has been wrestling at 130 all year, and that is the first time he came down to that base weight. So, I think he is going to be a force at the OVAC Tournament two weeks from now.”
